Statements From USG Chancellor Meredith and Board of Regents Chair Regarding Regent John Hunt’s Pass

Atlanta — March 19, 2003

Chancellor Thomas C. Meredith, chancellor of the University System of º¬Ðß²Ý, reported with deep sadness this morning the passing of Regent John Hunt of Tifton.

Hunt was named to the Board of Regents of the University System of º¬Ðß²Ý in 1997 by former Governor Zell Miller. During his tenure, he served as a highly active and engaged member of several committees – including currently chairing the Real Estate and Facilities Committee – until his passing.

“John Hunt will be deeply and sadly missed,” said Chancellor Meredith. “He was a consummate public servant. He took his role as a regent extremely seriously, dedicating not only his mental talents to the System’s governance – but also generously committing his financial resources to our priorities and needs. His passing is not only a loss for the Board of Regents, it is a grave loss for º¬Ðß²Ý to lose a statesman of his caliber.”

Current Board of Regents Chairman Joe Frank Harris was equally moved by the news of Hunt’s passing. “John was a regent’s regent, and his loss is a hard blow to this board,” said Gov. Harris. “He often brought us together as board members for campus visits and engagements at his home, building a camaraderie among our board that fostered solid teamwork and high productivity. His energy and spirit will be irreplaceable.”
