John McElveen Named Interim President of South º¬Ðß²Ý College

University System of º¬Ðß²Ý Chancellor Thomas C. Meredith announced today that he has appointed John P. McElveen, vice president for student development at Middle º¬Ðß²Ý College, to serve as interim president of South º¬Ðß²Ý College, in Douglas.
The appointment is effective July 1, 2005. McElveen will serve as interim president until a national search concludes with the appointment of a permanent president for South º¬Ðß²Ý College.
McElveen was named to his current position at Middle º¬Ðß²Ý College, in Cochran, in May 2001. He previously served as the college’s registrar and director of admissions from 1996 to 2001. Prior to this, he was director of admissions at Shorter College, in Rome, Ga. McElveen also worked as a registered architect for Brackett Associates Architects, in Cartersville, Ga., from 1983 to 1991.
“John McElveen has proven to be an outstanding talent in the University System,” Meredith said. “I know he will do an excellent job at South º¬Ðß²Ý College during this interim period.”
A member of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, McElveen also belongs to this organization’s regional and state counterparts. He is a member on the Regents Administrative Committee on Student Affairs and the Rotary Club in Cochran.
McElveen is enrolled in º¬Ðß²Ý Southern University’s doctoral studies program in educational leadership, where he is majoring in higher education administration. He holds a master of arts in higher education administration from the University of Alabama, a bachelor of architecture degree and also a bachelor of science degree in architecture, from Auburn University. He also attended Middle º¬Ðß²Ý College for two years.
South º¬Ðß²Ý College’s new interim president is married to Terri Strickland McElveen and has two children: Meredith, a student at the University of º¬Ðß²Ý; and Andrew, a student at Bleckley County High School, in Cochran.
Plans regarding the national search for a permanent presidential appointee will be forthcoming in the near future.
