DeVries Named Interim Executive Director of USG Office of Economic Development

Atlanta — February 3, 2003

Joy H. DeVries has been appointed interim executive director of the Office of Economic Development of the University System of º¬Ðß²Ý. DeVries’ appointment was announced today by Thomas E. Daniel, Senior Vice Chancellor for External Affairs and Facilities.

The University System’s Office of Economic Development leverages the resources of the state’s 34 public colleges and universities to support º¬Ð߲ݒs economic development. The centerpiece of the USG’s economic development programs is the Intellectual Capital Partnership Program®(ICAPP®), which provides one-stop entry to the intellectual capital of the System.

DeVries will assume her responsibilities on February 3, 2003, and remain in the position until a permanent executive director is named. She replaces Annie Hunt Burriss, former Associate Vice Chancellor, who was named as Governor Sonny Perdue’s deputy chief of staff for policy, legislative affairs and personnel. DeVries has served as a project manager for the Intellectual Capital Partnership Program since 2002. She also managed º¬Ðß²ÝHire, one of three signature programs of the Office of Economic Development. Prior to that, she served as senior project manager for the º¬Ðß²Ý Department of Industry, Trade and Tourism and also as senior project manager at the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. DeVries also worked for the º¬Ðß²Ý Institute of Technology, Apple Computer and IBM.

“ICAPP has developed an excellent reputation with the º¬Ðß²Ý business community,” Daniel said. “The program has had significant impact in creating jobs and extending the University System’s resources to business and industry. I look forward to the strong leadership Joy will bring in maintaining the momentum of this outstanding program.”

DeVries holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from the º¬Ðß²Ý Institute of Technology in Atlanta. She is a member of the º¬Ðß²Ý Economic Developers Association.
